Sex worker rights are human rights
We’ve always been very vocal about the discriminatory practices of mainstream financial institutions against sex workers. However, in recent months, we’ve been getting louder and more involved. That being said, all advocacy starts with awareness. After all, you can’t solve a problem you don’t know exists.
To help bring the issue to light, our very own Allie Knox dropped by Holly Randal Unfiltered for an interview about how sex workers are having their assets seized and access to their bank accounts blocked. You read that correctly — the consequences of financial discrimination are real and devastating.
Fortunately, other advocacy groups are starting to take notice and join our fight for financial liberty. In fact, the ACLU filed a Federal Trade Commission complaint against Mastercard for their less-than-savory behavior towards online sex workers.
As we all know, sex worker discrimination extends way beyond the financial sector, and the ways in which legal sex workers are getting treated are becoming more and more alarming. The issue is even more complex and unfair when you throw tourism and immigration into the mix, as the definition of legal sex work varies on a local level. In early September, Cashmere magazine reported that sex workers were actually being detained at the US border. If the threat of detention itself weren’t scary enough, the methods with which border agents are identifying who may or may not be a sex worker is opaque at best, with some suspecting facial recognition software.

Over the past few months, we’ve been doing our best to raise awareness for Mgen, a little-known STI with many of the hallmark symptoms of chlamydia. Cases of Mgen are on the rise, and when left untreated, can lead to serious health problems which may require surgical intervention. Women are more likely to suffer the more serious complications associated with Mgen than men.
The NHI has adopted a somewhat vague stance on the issue, claiming that until the condition is better understood, the benefits and risks of testing and treatment remain unclear. While we are currently out of take-home tests, PASS is a great resource for testing and education.
